不要一个人瞎担心,创建联接
The most important step in the process is step 1, never worry alone. Connect. Reach out. Commiserate. Brainstorm. Hug. Eat together. Talk. Play a game of cards. Hang out together. Do whatever you want; just don’t let yourself get cut off from others.
过度焦虑的副作用是一事无成
But the final common pathway for underachievement can often be excessive worry. A person can hold himself back by poring over the dangers of a new idea. In Gerry’s case, every time he had a new idea, his inner critic tied his hands. For example, once he had an idea for starting a restaurant, but he quickly negated that by telling himself that restaurants usually fail. He had an idea for starting a temp agency, but he heard the competition was too stiff. He had an idea for teaming up with his brother-in-law in the flower business, but he worried about working with a partner, especially his brother-in-law. He thought of writing a book about all he had seen in the TV business—and he had seen a lot—but he worried that the book might make enemies. He then thought of writing a mystery novel, but nixed that by deciding he couldn’t write well enough and that all the worthwhile plots were already taken anyway. He thought of setting up a tutoring business for the many kids who were not getting what they needed in school, but he decided he didn’t have the know-how to do that. Ironically, a friend, with much less know-how, stole this particular idea and did very well with.
解决办法是
Gerry needed to learn how to take a risk.
总结
After you have calculated the risks and taken precautions, and after you have sought out wise consultation and sound advice, and after you have considered the options and carefully weighed your decision … you must jump! You have to do it to get where you want to go. You have to act. Finally, this is the way out of the infinite web of what-if. You leave the frightening world of your imagination and enter the world of actual deeds. Something ventured, something gained.
